WASHINGTON Driving America's Future (DAF) Chairman, and former Secretary of Transportation under President Clinton, Rodney E. Slater today announced a new advertising program launched on radio stations across the country encouraging support for the bipartisan Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) legislation introduced by Representatives Baron Hill (D-IN) and Lee Terry (R-NE). DAF is a coalition which includes voices from the auto worker, farming and business communities, and supports the more balanced Hill-Terry which has been signed by more than 130 co-sponsors.

"Many Americans across the country are already engaging in the debate over our energy independence and the role CAFE regulations should play in that discussion," Sec. Slater said. "Undue reliance solely on CAFE standards, as is being discussed in Congress, will have a significant impact on our economy and the lives of millions of workers and their families. These ads will serve as an important tool for our coalition to educate citizens about this issue and encourage their involvement by voicing their opinions."

Slater added, "The Hill-Terry bill offers concerned Americans who believe CAFE standards should be raised, believe in innovation, a clean environment and a strong economy an opportunity for action which should not be squandered. Driving America's Future supports this bold yet balanced and thus better legislation and encourages Congress to do the same."

Driving America's Future (www.drivingamericasfuture.com) is a coalition of industry and consumers promoting the future of alternative fuels for the reduction of gasoline consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. The coalition is committed to educating others about this important policy issue based on the founding principle that innovation and technology is the path to a clean energy future, not just promotion of fuel economy regulations which will only hurt the American auto industry.

Rodney E. Slater served as the U.S. Secretary of Transportation under President Bill Clinton. Before serving as secretary, Slater held the distinguished role of becoming the first African American Administrator of the Federal Highway Administration. Because of the dedication of Sec. Slater to seeking feasible solutions to our country's transportation issues, he is now speaking out about CAFE standards on behalf of Driving America's Future.
